The wood stove is the ultimate wood-burning appliance. Its combustion chamber, being completely inside the home, makes the most of the heat released by the fires. New appliances on the market feature an energy-efficient design that burns combustion gases twice rather than once. Not only does this reduce the amount of heat lost to the outside world, it also reduces the emission of fine particulate pollutants.

When properly used, a slow-burning appliance creates less than 6 grams of fine particles per hour. By comparison, a non-EPA appliance will produce an average of 30 to 80 grams of fine particles per hour.

A wide variety of doors can be manufactured.

They can have 2 or 4 doors, be louvered or solid, have frames for glass or fire doors, and feature an air intake at the base. Finishes are available in black, brushed nickel, gold or brass.
